CD Ampers Master Electrician wiring a modern 200 amp residential breaker panel

The Heart of Your Home's Electrical Grid

Your main electrical panel (or breaker box) is the central nervous system of your property. It receives power directly from the utility company and safely distributes it to every circuit in your home. However, as Los Angeles homeowners rapidly modernize adding Central AC, electric vehicle (EV) chargers, induction stovetops, and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) older panels simply cannot keep up.

At CD Ampers Electrical, we specialize in heavy-duty service upgrades. We safely replace outdated 60-amp and 100-amp panels with robust 200-amp and 400-amp systems, giving you the capacity to power your modern lifestyle without constantly tripping the main breaker.

The Severe Danger of Zinsco & FPE Panels

Recalled Zinsco electrical panel showing melted bus bars and fire hazards

If your Los Angeles home was built between the 1950s and 1980s, there is a high likelihood it contains a Zinsco or Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) "Stab-Lok" panel.

These specific builder-grade panels are universally recognized by fire departments and insurance companies as catastrophic safety hazards. Due to massive design flaws, their breakers frequently fail to trip during an electrical overload or short circuit. Instead of cutting the power, the breakers melt to the bus bar, allowing the wires inside your walls to superheat and ignite. If you have one of these panels, you are living with a severe fire risk. We specialize in rapidly replacing them with safe, modern Square D or Eaton systems.

Navigating Permits & LADWP/SCE Meter Spots

Approved LADWP/SCE electrical meter spot and city inspection tag

Upgrading a main panel is a highly regulated, multi-step process. You cannot simply pull an old box off the wall and attach a bigger one.

First, we must submit engineering drawings to LADWP or Southern California Edison (SCE) to secure a "Meter Spot." A utility engineer determines if the existing location is legally compliant regarding clearances from gas meters, windows, and property lines. If it fails, the new panel must be relocated. Once the location is approved, we pull the necessary LADBS (City of Los Angeles) or local city permits. We coordinate the power shut-off with the utility, install the new panel, drive the new 8-foot grounding rods to meet modern NEC codes, and wait for the city inspector's final approval before the utility restores power. We handle this entire bureaucracy so you don't have to.

The Importance of Proper Grounding

Many older Los Angeles homes rely on their cold water plumbing pipes as the only electrical ground. Under modern National Electrical Code (NEC), this is no longer sufficient. When we perform a panel upgrade, a massive part of the job is bringing your home's grounding system up to current safety standards.

We physically drive two 8-foot copper-clad grounding rods deep into the earth outside your home, spacing them at least 6 feet apart. We then bond these rods directly to your new electrical panel with heavy-gauge copper wire, and cross-bond them to your home's gas and water lines. This creates a highly secure path for stray electrical currents (like lightning strikes or massive power surges) to disperse safely into the earth, rather than traveling through your appliances or family members.

Panel Upgrade FAQs

Master electrician reviewing a newly installed electrical panel with a happy homeowner
Why do I need a 200-amp panel upgrade?
Most homes built before 1980 were equipped with 60-amp or 100-amp panels. Today, a single Central AC unit or an EV charger can draw up to 50 amps on its own. If you try to run modern appliances on an old panel, you will constantly trip the main breaker and risk starting an electrical fire. A 200-amp upgrade gives you the capacity to safely run heavy modern loads.
Are Zinsco and Federal Pacific (FPE) panels really dangerous?
Yes, they are highly dangerous. Both Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) "Stab-Lok" and Zinsco panels have been widely recalled due to massive design flaws. Their breakers frequently fail to trip when overloaded, causing the bus bars to melt and ignite wall fires. In fact, most homeowner's insurance companies will drop your coverage or refuse to insure your home if they discover you have one of these panels.
What is an LADWP or SCE "Meter Spot"?
When upgrading a panel, we cannot simply place the new, larger panel wherever we want. We must submit a formal request to your utility provider (LADWP or SCE) for a "Meter Spot." An engineer comes out to determine the exact, code-compliant location for the new service drop to ensure proper clearances from gas meters, windows, and property lines. We handle this entire bureaucratic process for you.
How long will my power be out during the upgrade?
The physical installation of the new panel usually takes one full day. However, because the utility company (LADWP or SCE) must disconnect the power from the street in the morning, and the city inspector must approve the work before the utility reconnects it in the afternoon, there is a strict timeline. Your power will typically be out from 8:00 AM to around 4:00 PM on the day of the upgrade.
