Preventing Electrical Fires

When Power Fails, Precision Matters

An electrical emergency is more than just an inconvenience; it is an immediate threat to your property and your family. In Los Angeles, the combination of aging 1950s housing infrastructure, intense summer heatwaves pushing Central AC units to their limits, and heavy winter rains exposing roof leaks leads to severe electrical faults.

At CD Ampers Electrical, we don't just reset breakers and walk away. We act as electrical detectives. Our goal is to rapidly identify the root cause of the hazard, isolate the danger, and execute a permanent, code-compliant repair so you can sleep soundly.

Do Not Ignore Burning Smells or Buzzing

Severely burnt and melted electrical outlet showing fire damage

The human senses are often the first line of defense. If you detect a "fishy" or burning plastic smell near an outlet, or hear a loud crackling/buzzing noise coming from your breaker panel, you have active electrical arcing.

Arcing means electricity is jumping across a gap, creating temperatures upwards of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This will quickly ignite the wood studs and insulation inside your walls. Do not attempt to touch a buzzing panel. If it is safe to do so, turn off your main power from the exterior meter and call our emergency line immediately.

Common Emergency Scenarios We Fix

Electrician testing a constantly tripping breaker

Constantly Tripping Breakers

If a breaker trips immediately after resetting it, do not force it to stay on. This indicates a "hard short" in the wiring or an overloaded circuit. We trace the line to find the exact point of failure.

Sparking or Dead Outlets

Old, loose receptacles cause high resistance and sparks. If a chain of outlets suddenly goes dead, we use specialized tracing tools to find the hidden burnt connection disrupting the circuit.

Partial Power Loss ("Lost a Leg")

If half your house has power but the AC and oven don't work, you've lost one 120V leg of power. We quickly determine if the fault is inside your main panel or an issue with LADWP/SCE at the street.

Water Damage & Flooded Panels

Heavy rains can run down the exterior utility mast and flood your breaker box. We safely de-energize the system, dry the components, and replace heavily corroded bus bars to restore safety.

Our Advanced Diagnostic Process

Guesswork has no place in emergency electrical repair. When our master electricians arrive, they deploy commercial-grade diagnostic equipment.

We utilize multimeters and megaohmmeters to test the integrity of wire insulation hidden behind your drywall. If you report a burning smell, we use FLIR Thermal Imaging Cameras to scan your walls and panels, allowing us to literally "see" the heat signature of a failing connection before it ignites. Once we isolate the fault, we provide a clear, upfront explanation of exactly what needs to be repaired.

Immediate Action & Repair

Because an emergency requires immediate action, our service vans operate as "rolling warehouses." We arrive stocked with hundreds of premium breakers, thick-gauge copper wire, commercial-grade receptacles, and temporary power solutions.

Our goal is to fix the problem in a single visit, not to slap a band-aid on it and tell you we have to order parts for next week. Whether it requires pulling new wire through the attic, replacing a melted main breaker, or bypassing a damaged underground conduit, we stay until your home is safe and the lights are back on.

Clear Answers

Emergency Electrical FAQs

Electrician explaining the repair process to a concerned homeowner
What should I do if I smell fish or burning plastic near an outlet?
A "fishy" or burning plastic smell is a massive red flag. It means the plastic components inside an outlet, switch, or breaker are physically melting due to severe electrical arcing. Turn off the main breaker to your home immediately if it is safe to do so, and call our emergency dispatch line. Do not use any electronics until we inspect the wiring.
Why do I only have power in half of my house?
A partial power loss usually means you have "lost a leg" of power. Your home receives two 120-volt lines (legs) from the utility company to create a 240-volt system. If one leg fails either at the street transformer, your weatherhead, or inside your main breaker half the house goes dark, and 240V appliances like your AC will not work. We can quickly diagnose where the drop occurred.
Is a buzzing electrical panel dangerous?
A faint hum can be normal for some heavily loaded breakers, but a loud, crackling, or buzzing noise indicates dangerous electrical arcing between a failing breaker and the bus bar. Do NOT touch the panel. Call us for an immediate emergency inspection to prevent an electrical fire.
Are you available on weekends and holidays?
Yes. Electrical emergencies do not respect business hours. Our dispatch unit is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including major holidays, because your family's safety cannot wait.
