Power Your Commute, Safely

Buying an Electric Vehicle in Southern California is an exciting step towards efficiency, but relying on the standard 120-volt "Level 1" charger that comes with the car is incredibly frustrating. Adding only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour means your car might not be ready for your morning commute.

Upgrading to a dedicated 240-volt Level 2 charging station allows you to charge your vehicle up to 10 times faster giving you a full battery overnight. However, this massive increase in power draw requires precise, professional electrical engineering.

The Severe Danger of Unpermitted Outlets

Melted residential NEMA 14-50 outlet caused by an unpermitted EV charger load

Many handymen offer cheap EV installations by simply adding a NEMA 14-50 "dryer plug" to your garage without pulling permits or checking your main panel's capacity. This is highly dangerous.

An EV pulls a continuous, heavy electrical load for 8+ hours. Standard dryer receptacles are designed for intermittent use. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging a heavy EV cord wears out the cheap contacts, creating high resistance that leads to melting and severe electrical fires. We install heavy-duty, commercial-grade receptacles or hardwire the station directly, ensuring your home stays safe while delivering maximum charging speeds.

Utility Rebates & Load Calculations

Approved electrical permits required for LADWP and SCE EV charger rebates

Local utility companies like LADWP and Southern California Edison (SCE) offer fantastic rebates (often hundreds of dollars) to cover the cost of your Level 2 charger installation. However, there is a catch.

To qualify for these rebates, the installation must be performed by a state-licensed C-10 electrician, and a final city permit must be signed off. Furthermore, we perform a mandatory NEC Load Calculation (see below) before starting. If your current electrical panel cannot handle the extra 50 amps, the city inspector will fail the job. We handle all the math, the permits, and the paperwork so your upgrade is fully legal and rebate-ready.

Do I Need a Panel Upgrade?

Master electrician performing a load calculation on a residential breaker panel

The most common question we get is, "Can my house handle an EV charger?" The answer depends on your existing service. If your home still has an older 100-amp panel, running your Central AC, electric oven, and an EV charger at the same time will trip your main breaker instantly.

If a load calculation shows your panel is maxed out, we have two solutions: We can perform a full 200-Amp Panel Upgrade to future-proof your home, or, if budget is a concern, we can install a Smart Load Management Module (like a DCC-9). This clever device temporarily pauses your EV charger when your home's total power usage spikes, allowing you to install a charger without replacing the entire panel.

EV Charger Installation FAQs

Happy customer successfully charging their EV at home
Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?
It depends on your current electrical capacity. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240-volt, 40-to-60 amp breaker. If your home only has a 100-amp panel, running the AC and charging a car simultaneously will overload the system. We perform a strict NEC load calculation to determine if a panel upgrade or a smart load-management module is required.
Can I just plug my EV into my dryer outlet?
We strongly advise against this. Standard dryer outlets (NEMA 10-30 or 14-30) were designed for intermittent loads, not the continuous 8-to-10 hour high-amperage draw of an electric vehicle. Repeated plugging and unplugging wears out the receptacle contacts rapidly, leading to high resistance, melting, and severe fire hazards. A hardwired dedicated circuit is significantly safer.
Do you handle the permits required for LADWP or SCE EV rebates?
Yes. To qualify for lucrative utility rebates from LADWP or Southern California Edison, your EV charger must be installed by a licensed C-10 contractor, and a permit must be pulled and finalized by the city. We handle the entire permitting process to ensure you get your rebate without a hitch.
Should I get a hardwired charger or a plug-in (NEMA 14-50) version?
A hardwired installation is highly recommended. Hardwired chargers allow for faster charging speeds (up to 48 or 60 amps), whereas plug-in models are limited to 40 amps. Furthermore, recent changes to the National Electrical Code (NEC) require GFCI protection for 240V garage outlets. Plug-in chargers often have their own internal GFCI, which clashes with the breaker GFCI, causing frustrating "nuisance tripping." Hardwiring eliminates this issue entirely.
